The Kachin narrative and religious culture was entirely oral until the 1890s, when the first attempt was made to record it in a standardized Jainpho script. The most talented individuals within this culture are the black Joiwa priests and storytellers, who can hold hours of conversation with high spirits, as can be seen at the Mana Festival at Namjin Dua.
